Catch My Breath™
About the Topic
CATCH My Breath™, a youth e-cigarette, JUUL, and vape prevention program specific to grades 5-12. The evidence-based program was shown to substantially reduce students’ likelihood of vaping in the year following program implementation. Students also showed a significant increase in knowledge of the dangers of vaping and an increase in positive perceptions about choosing a vape-free lifestyle.
About the Speaker
Carrie Higgins is the Program Director of the Tobacco Education and Prevention Coalition for Porter County (TEPCPC). The TEPCPC is one of 49 partners throughout Indiana that is funded through a grant from the Indiana Tobacco Prevention and Cessation division at the Indiana Department of Health. The TEPCPC is affiliated with the Valparaiso College of Nursing and Health Professions who serves as the lead agency for the grant. She earned her B.S. in Community Health Education from Purdue University and her M.S. in Instructional Design from Purdue Northwest. Having received her certification as a Certified Health Education Specialist in 1990, she has served in local health promotion efforts within health departments, schools and universities. Carrie previously served as an Assistant Clinical Professor of Communication at Purdue University Northwest with an emphasis in service-learning within group communication, business communication and public relations. She assisted with COVID-19 Tracking as a Lead Investigator prior to joining Valparaiso over a year ago.
